Review: Disney on Ice Rockin Ever After

We just got home from Disney On Ice Rockin' Ever After.  One of our young nephews was in town, so our oldest gave up his ticket so he could go.  He's 6, like Lydia, but had never been to a show like this before.

In the car on the way there, Lydia was explaining how there were men and women who did amazing skating and dressed up like characters from princess movies.  He replied, "That's really not my style."

Once the show started, however, he was dancing in his seat and having a great time!  He admitted that he thought the show was great!  He seemed most interested in the lighting arrangement, and declared his favorite part when the fireworks went off.

Yes!  Fireworks go off during various parts of this show, and there's even real fire torches during the Beauty and the Beast scenes. It was another extremely well-done, professional, entertaining show.  I love how they come up with a different spin on stories we know so well through the use of costumes and ice dancing.

This show focuses on Ariel, Rapunzel, Merida and Belle.  It's the first show with Merida performing and I loved the way they portrayed her little brothers!

As always, the show started right on time, and lasted for 2 hours with a short intermission half way through.  I really appreciate how the show is always on time.

The show is still in Phoenix through the weekend.  Check Ticketmaster for tickets.  The show received a big "thumbs up" from our family!

I have a few pictures I took -- which aren't the best -- but give you an idea of the show. You really have to see it in person to fully appreciate the level of artistry that goes into every aspect, from lighting to costumes to choreography.

Review: Disney on Ice 100 Years of Magic

Last night, we headed to the USAirways Center in Phoenix to watch Disney On Ice celebrates 100 Years of Magic.

We love Disney, and we love these ice shows!  The skaters are amazing and we are entertained non-stop throughout the show.

The show started with Mickey & Minnie (of course!)  I love how sweet they always appear on stage.  I know it's a show - but they really are sweet to each other, and it makes me grin when they hold hands.  They do an awesome job of making you feel the gentle romance between them.

Not only are all of the skaters amazingly athletic and talented, but the costumes blow me away!   One of the popular numbers of the evening was the Aladdin / Genie number.  At one point, Aladdin and the Genie did simultaneous backflips!  That was Nate's favorite part of the show.

The costume designers successfully take animated characters and create costumes that capture that animated character into something that a skater can wear on the ice.  For instance, check out the sharks from the Finding Nemo number!

Aren't they amazing? I thought it was extremely clever to have the smaller shark's fin be the skater's head.

The Toy Story number was another favorite.  The toy soldiers routine  was high energy, funny, and flawlessly executed.  The soldiers are one of my favorites, and Lydia loved the song "You've Got A Friend in Me" for Woody & Buzz's number.

I didn't get any good shots of the princesses, but they were beautiful and amazing as well. Lydia liked that so many princesses appeared during the show (although she did miss Aurora and Rapunzel.)

It's so hard to choose a favorite number, so I encourage you to see the show yourself and be blown away!

Review: Disney on Ice Toy Story 3 in Phoenix

We just got home from the Phoenix opening night of Disney on Ice presents Disney/Pixar's Toy Story 3 show.  According to Nate, it was "fleeping amazing!"  I would have to agree, although I'm not sure what fleeping means.  He tells me it's an adjective that makes it even more amazing.

I wasn't sure how they would translate the Toy Story 3 movie to ice, but after watching the show, I think they did a fantastic job!  There was enough of the movie plot to be familiar, but the choreography and the music made it an excellent ice show.  The music chosen was upbeat and fun, and went perfectly with the scenes and the skaters.

One thing that I noticed that was even better than previous shows was the use of lights.  The lights helped set many of the scenes and really brought the set to life.  At one point, the center of the stage looked like an old-fashioned TV set and during another point, the ice was flooded with rainbows.

The skaters were fabulous.  They have so much talent, and athletic skill, that it is fun to watch them skate. There were so many great numbers -- and we all chose different favorite parts when we were talking in the car on the way home.  The aliens and the Barbies were definite hits!  I'm also amazed at how well the skaters do in the elaborate character costumes.

One thing that I love about these shows is that they are wonderful for all ages!  My 4 yo daughter has a great time, but my 9 and 11 yo sons also had fun and laughed and clapped throughout the show.   Bo is in Florida for work today, so my mom was able to come with us and she thought it was terrific.

I know that when we attend one of these shows, that everyone will leave feeling that they had been entertained for 2 solid hours.  Every show seems better than the last!

Disney on Ice: Toy Story Coming to Phoenix!

There's so much excitement surrounding Christmas, I'm not telling the kids yet about Disney on Ice's show that is coming to Phoenix January 18 - 22!  BUT, you can bet when the post-holiday blues hit, they will be thrilled to hear that we'll be attending opening night!

It's hard to believe that the first Toy Story came out in 1995!  My three kids have enjoyed the movies, and when Toy Story 3 was scheduled to come out in the theaters, Bo took the kids to see Toy Story and Toy Story 2 that were running on the big screen in anticipation of Toy Story 3's release.

We have attended a number of Disney on Ice shows over the past few years, and have always had a fantastic time!  It seems that each show is better than the last, but I guess the reality is that they are all so unique and well-done that they are very enjoyable on their own.

I am eager to see how they will transfer Toy Story 3 onto the ice, and I know the kids will be excited.  Tickets went on sale yesterday through Ticketmaster.   Opening night is Wednesday, January 18, 2012.  The show runs through January 22, 2012 at US Airways Center in Phoenix.

Review: Disney on Ice Princess Classics

Last night, we attended the Phoenix performance of Disney on Ice, Princess Classics. The show was full of princesses (of course!) and quite a bit of fun. During the first half of the show, we saw Jasmine, Sleeping Beauty, Ariel, Mulan, Snow White and Belle. Pieces of each of their stories were enacted on the ice. My favorite was Ariel -- the costumes of the fish were amazing, and the skaters who performed Ariel and Prince Philip seemed the most athletic and daring!  I also really enjoyed the Seven Dwarfs from Snow White.

After intermission, we enjoyed Cinderella's story. I especially loved the wicked stepsisters. They were hilarious and their pratfalls on skates were definitely the work of pros!  While the princesses were the definite stars of the show, the secondary characters brought quite a bit of fun to each segment.

Another neat thing about this performance was the huge castle at the back of the stage.  They were able to twist the turrets and main building of the castle to create different sets and castles.  It was very unique and well done.

My children enjoyed the show.  Lydia (3yo) loved seeing her princess friends, but she also loved seeing the Beast and the witches.  Nate ( 8yo)  thought the sets were pretty neat and was very interested in how Aladdin's rug flew around the arena and the different props that were used.

Review: Another Fabulous Disney on Ice Show! (Discount Code for Phoenix!)

Last night, we attended the opening night performance for Disney on Ice's Let's Celebrate show in Phoenix. 

It was fabulous!  It seems that each show is better than the last, but they are all so good that it doesn't seem fair to say that it was better.  They are all different, and enjoyable, and so well-done.

There are plenty of laughs, as well as amazing skating. I'm always impressed by the athleticism and professionalism of the skaters who take on the Disney character personas.  Of course, you expect the princesses -- but last night we were also treated to Toy Story characters and the pig character was hilarious and so well done!  The pig had skates on his (her?) hands as well as feet, so he looked just like the character in the movie.

It's hard to choose a favorite part of the show, but I think I loved the sequence with Mickey as the Sorcerer's Apprentice and the brooms.  The brooms were all skaters, in costumes that glowed under black lights and they were great!  Another favorite for me was the Hawaiian summer celebration segment.  Fun music, as well as a ring of fire on the ice!

This show even had fireworks to highlight some of the celebrations!  And, of course, Mickey and Minnie Mouse were there to host the entire show.  Which just reminded me of another favorite -- the depiction of a Japanese celebration to welcome spring with a cherry blossom tree and pink LED fans.

Lydia liked seeing all of her princess friends -- including Snow White who was the only princess we didn't have a chance to meet while at DisneyLand last year.  The princes threw and flipped and spun the princesses with no fear of the skates on their feet!  It was a delight to watch them skate.

We grinned throughout the entire show and had a great time.  The show is in Phoenix until January 23rd, so if you're looking for something to do with the family, head on down to US Airways and take in a fabulous show!  It's obviously kid-friendly, but also entertaining for adults.

Review: Disney on Ice 100 Years of Magic

We just got back from the Phoenix show of Disney on Ice: 100 Years of Magic.  It was wonderful!  Thanks to Feld Entertainment, my family attended opening night and had a wonderful time.  It was very difficult to choose a favorite act.

The athleticism of the performers was exceptional!  The skating was absolutely flawless, and had to be quite the challenge in some of the costumes (especially The Beast!)

Lydia (who turns 3 later this month) was enthralled and engaged the entire 2 hour show. She was thrilled to see the princesses, as well as Mickey, Minnie and the Chipmunks. She laughed and gasped and squealed with delight throughout the show.

My 2 boys (ages 7 & 9) also enjoyed the show.  A few scenes especially appealed to them. There was an act with the Toy Story soldiers that was extremely well-done, and the skater who performed as Woody did an amazing job appearing floppy on the stage, just like a stuffed doll would be.  The skaters also enacted a war scene from Mulan that was executed perfectly.

We had amazing seats (Row 9!) and the time flew by while we all enjoyed the show.  The 100 Years of Magic show includes scenes and stories from beloved Disney characters throughout the years.  It's hard to choose which one I liked the most - but the reenactment of the Small World ranked in the top.

As they show ended, and all the skaters were on the ice, Lydia looked down and said "I love them all!"

I was happy to choose a winner for this week's Disney on Ice performance!  Cynthia was the lucky winner, and is excited to take her boys later this week.
